13A – Reading Reflection No. 1

1) You read about an entrepreneur:
What surprised you the most?
How when Steve Jobs came back to apple in 1997/1998 he recovered the company from over a billion dollars in loss and was able to bring it to over hundreds of millions of dollars in profit

What about the entrepreneur did you most admire?
What surprised me most was how tenacious and determined Steve Jobs was. He worked very hard to build everything he did. How he was able to use elements from his past to build principles used into apple products, such as the calligraphy course he took in college as well as his experience from working for Atari into how to make products simple and intuitive.

What about the entrepreneur did you least admire?
The fact that he did not believe that Lisa was his daughter, and that he had a paternity tests done to verify.

Did the entrepreneur encounter adversity and failure? If so, what did they do about it?
Yes, when we had completely left apple. He went onto another business ventures such as Next, Inc. and Pixar.

2) What competencies did you notice that the entrepreneur exhibited?
Extreme power of persuasion into making people believe the could do something a help them achieve that. Incredible vision for the company, and his ability to understand what consumers wanted (even if they did not even know how to express what they wanted), which was a product that had a simple design and intuitive functions

3) Identify at least one part of the reading that was confusing to you.
The part of the book that was somewhat confusing to me was when he sold Next to Apple and came back to Apple. If I understand correctly, he came back in as a board member but then became CEO.

4) If you were able to ask two questions to the entrepreneur, what would you ask? Why?
Did you ever dream that a company you created would become the first trillion dollar company in the history of Earth?
What would you have done differently (if anything) of what you did in regards to your company?

5) For fun: what do you think the entrepreneur's opinion was of hard work? Do you share that opinion?
I think Steve jobs would think that hard work is extremely important. He worked very hard to achieve everything he did, and in the process he motivated so many people to do the same. He has shown us that had work can pay off. Yes, I absolutely share the same opinion that hard work is extremely important.

  1. Good reading reflection! I learned a lot about Steve Jobs that I did not know, such as he did not believe that Lisa was his daughter. I really like your second question where you ask if he would do anything differently. I think it would be really interesting to hear about things that he would want to change now that he can look back on all of it.

  2. Hi Arthur,

As a big Apple fan, great job on your reading reflection. I have probably read almost everything about the man as well as watched all of the documentaries/movies. There is no doubt he was and still remains one of the biggest visionaries the world has ever seen. Steve was a troubled man, no doubt, but the man changed how the world communicates. An amazing man with extraordinary vision for the future.
