9A – Testing the Hypothesis, Part 2
Who: After conducting the exercise "Hypothesis 1", I was able to interview potential users of the proposed web and mobile application. I then discovered that even among the people who I would initially consider of being a potential user of this product, may end up not being a customer depending mainly on: whether they have or do not have health insurance and whether they have the time to use it or not.
What: This need differs from other needs that would require another kind of therapy other than speech therapy.
Why: The underlying cause for the outsiders needs being different from those inside the boundary is that this proposed application would work with speech therapy because it deals with cognitive and communication skills. Other kinds of therapy (physical, occupational) required knowledge that can not be taught to parents through the web or mobile application.
During this second set of interviews, I have noticed that not all parents who have children that need speech therapy may want to use the app given the fact that they simply prefer not to deal with the therapy and prefer to pay for it. This is mostly true for the family with higher incomes or for those who have coverage under health insurance/medicaid.

Inside boundary
|
Outside boundary
|
Who: Parents that have the time and care about their children communications skills to the point that they are willing to help their child themselves.
Parents who do not have health insurance/medicaid and cannot afford to pay therapy visits out-of-pocket.
|
Who: Parents that do not have the time and do not have extra care about their children communications skills to the point that they are willing to help their child themselves.
Parents that have health insurance/medicaid and can afford to pay therapy visits out-of-pocket.
|
What: To provide an much less expensive way for parents to have their speech therapy needs met.
| What: It is not a 100% replacement for speech therapy as the child still needs to have an professional evaluation every 6 months. It also does not cover other kinds of therapy at the moment. |
Why: Because speech therapy is very expensive to families that do not have health insurance/medicaid.
|
Alternative Explanation: Additionally, for parents who see the value of improving their child's communication skills in any way possible.

Hi Arthur,
ReplyDeleteI think you did a good job of determining what was inside/outside your boundaries. I think there will be some overlap in the who category as people my try therapy but then soon decide that they do not like it and would rather use your program. I saw that you wrote that the children will need to have a professional evaluation each month and I was wondering if they would have to do that at a speech therapists office or if they would have video access to that through your program. Not sure how feasible having it though the program would be, I just thought it would be interesting!
Hi Arthur,
ReplyDeleteYour table was done very well with contrasting sides. I get a real good sense of your boundaries and where each side falls. The needs almost have to differ as well because no two cases are alike. Whether it's the affordability, the means, or the child's ability, there are so many variables that need to be individually addressed and accounted for.
